This release from the Nikka Whisky team is designed to replace their no age statement variant and is said to contain a range of different aged releases and is matured in ex-Sherry Casks. uk accepts no liability for inaccuracies or misstatements about products by manufacturers or other third parties. This rare version of Miyagikyo single malt is part of the “Nikka Discovery” series: an inside look at the various experiments made during the whisky making process at Nikka. Asahi Breweries acquired Nikka in 2001 since when Japanese whiskies, as a whole, have seen a huge rise in popularity across the world and has led to significant further expansion of the their production facilties to cope with demand.

Nikka’s founder Masataka Taketsuru chose this site in the mountains of Sendai to contrast with his first distillery, Yoichi, which located in the coastal area. In Yoichi, Masataka Taketsuru saw numerous reminders of Scotland, and this convinced him that this should be the home of Japanese Whisky. GRASSY NOTES, CANDIED CITRUS PEEL AND SPICES WITH A RICH SHERRY INFLUENCE – Nikka Miyagikyo Single Malt is made from unpeated and lightly peated barley which gives a complex and delicate whisky with notes of freshly cut grass, nuts, citrus peel and the merest wisp of smoke. The distillery is the larger of the two Nikka distilleries, with an annual production capacity of two million litres. The Miyagikyo distillery or Sendai distillery as it used to be known opened in 1969 and was the second to be opened by the Nikka company after Yoichi in 1934.

Masataka Taketsuru intentionally positioned these distilleries side by side, purposefully aligning them with distinct natural environments and production methods. This bottling has estery aromas generated by carefully selected yeast strains along with distinctive Sherry cask influence.

This contrasts with their first distillery of Yoichi in Hokkaido which is situated on the coast and displays a much peatier character. He aimed to make a complete contrast between the two distilleries, Miyagikyo and Yoichi, with different natural environments and production methods. Miyagikyo single malts have an elegance and fruity nature, using malted barley that is both lightly peated and non-peated. With a delicate aroma of apples, this expression showcases a beautiful harmony of finesse and sweetness brought by apple brandy casks and Miyagikyo single malt’s original characteristics such as distinctive hints of Sherry and spiciness like cinnamon.

Replacing the previous NAS Miyagikyo single malt as well as the remaining age statement expressions, this single release will represent the distillery going forward as demand for Japanese whisky remains as strong as ever.
