This story of a young woman in Ghana is perhaps a bit bittersweet but ends just exactly the way it needs to for the protagonist. But it is Accra that eventually wins Afi’s heart and gives her a life of independence that she never could have imagined for herself. This post is for those who’ve been finding it difficult to read as of late; I’m not entirely sure what’s in the air, but whatever is floating around isn’t conducive to getting through a book. These expectations expose the simultaneous beauty and burden of family, which can be both comforting (such as Afi’s relationship with her cousin Mawusi) and a source of intense strife (such as the relationship with her uncle Pious.I mean, yes, this book supplied me with a sort of figurative IV of drama, a constant drip of tea that offered me restorative health benefits, a steady stream of scandal the likes of which I want every single conversation I have to take inspiration from. From there on, the story takes on a Rebecca like tone because her husband, Eli, is seeing another woman. Therefore, it seemed a little out of place later when she made it seem like she was being cheated on when she came in as the latter day entrant to the “polygamous” relationship. At a time when adventure is scarce, Medie gives you a lot to look forward to, think about and be grateful for. Love, jealousy, betrayal, and angst add some spice to the story, making for some mostly entertaining reading material.
