About this deal

The production transferred to Dublin's Gaiety Theatre where Linehan reprised her role opposite Derbhle Crotty. This is a tight, neat co-production by Chichester Festival theatre and the Lyric Hammersmith, directed by Rachel O’Riordan with Fitzgerald as a commanding, angry presence, her position in the world defined by small victories over her mother. Theatregoers since Ibsen would recognise the single set with its realistic representation of a Connemara cottage, the two-act structure and the story of a grown-up daughter whose dreams are thwarted by the demands of a cantankerous mother. Rachel O’Riordan directs a major revival of this darkly comic, award-winning play by Martin McDonagh ( Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri; The Lieutenant of Inishmore), starring Adam Best ( Giri/Haji), Ingrid Craigie ( Roadkill; The Cripple of Inishmaan), Orla Fitzgerald ( The Young Offenders) and Kwaku Fortune ( Line of Duty; Normal People). McDonagh) offers all the familiar delights of farce and melodrama, while at the same time offering a powerful critique of contemporary Ireland.

Set in the mountains of Connemara, County Galway, The Beauty Queen of Leenane tells the darkly comic tale of Maureen Folan, a plain and lonely woman in her early forties, and Mag, her manipulative ageing mother, whose interference in Maureen's first and possibly final chance of a loving relationship sets in motion a train of events that leads inexorably toward the play's terrifying denouement. Maureen, knowing Mag should not have that information, tortures Mag with hot oil until she confesses the contents of the letter.Maureen tells her that she was able to catch Pato at the station before he left and they confessed their love for one another.

Brilliant Ray Dooley, younger brother of Pato, played so well by Marty Breen, was wooed throughout by daytime telly. Maureen Folan’s mother, Mag, meddles in Maureen’s first opportunity at a real relationship and ultimately pays for it with her life.

The play received its American premiere opening Off-Broadway on 11 February 1998, presented by the Atlantic Theatre Company at the Linda Gross Theater. The “morning after” scene in which Mag finds her daughter flaunting her sexual conquest is both queasy and tender.

Pato is a construction worker who lives primarily in London, though he is unhappy both there and in Leenane. In the mountains of Connemara, County Galway, Maureen Folan – a plain, lonely woman, tied to her manipulative and ageing mother, Mag – comes alive at her first and possibly last prospect of a new life. OK, let’s examine why Martin McDonagh’s coruscating, utterly brilliant plays that address the human condition like an impossible, dangerous friend are always described as Tarantinoesque. uk or 0131 228 1404 so we can arrange reserved seating for you and discuss how else we can best support your visit. Only when Cillian Ó Gairbhí shows up as Pato, very much not the playboy of the western world, does she reveal her inner beauty queen.Elizabeth Appleby understands that 40-year-old Maureen is both openly contemptuous of her mother and fatally under her grip. Yet their relationship, however awful it is (and over arguments about Complan lumps, the smell after the mammy empties her po into the sink each morning, it really is) is grim and familiar, almost a grotesque marriage. Left alone in the house, Maureen puts on Mag's sweater, sits in her rocking chair, and adopts her mannerisms. As a slice of Irish gothic, it is at its best when characters are exposing their vulnerabilities rather than fulminating with rage or enacting violence.
